The 2023 Mazda CX-5 not only upholds the brand’s well-known reputation for agile handling but also provides a near-luxury experience at an affordable price for the masses. This unique combination of responsive road performance and refined interior features distinguishes the CX-5 as one of our preferred compact SUVs, particularly when considering the upscale variants with the optional 256-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While the base engine delivers 187 horsepower and may feel a bit slower, all models come standard with all-wheel drive and the CX-5’s agile handling, ensuring satisfaction no matter your choice of powertrain.

New Features In 2023

This year, the CX-5 welcomes a new addition to its lineup, the CX-50, a vehicle of similar size, sparking a sibling rivalry right within the same showroom. Mazda has expressed its intention to keep both models available to customers for the foreseeable future. While the 2023 CX-5 remains mostly unchanged from the previous year, it does introduce a fresh optional paint color called Rhodium White.

Performance of The Mazda CX-5

The standard four-cylinder engine in the CX-5, generating 187 horsepower, exhibits impressive responsiveness when accelerating from stoplights or navigating city streets, creating a sensation of swiftness that exceeds its actual performance. However, it tends to feel underpowered at higher speeds, particularly when attempting to overtake or merge onto the freeway. In contrast, the turbocharged variant with 256 horsepower, which we had the opportunity to test, delivers notably faster acceleration. Both powertrains are mated to a brisk six-speed automatic transmission and feature all-wheel drive.

What’s great about the CX-5 is that you don’t need to push it to the limit to relish its excellence. Its precise steering and composed handling qualities make it an ideal companion for leisurely Sunday drives. Furthermore, it excels at absorbing bumps and rough road surfaces with minimal disturbance, boasting ride quality that rivals crossovers commanding twice the price. This seamless blend of dynamic attributes sets it apart from its competitors.

Fuel Economy

Equipped with a pair of engine choices, the CX-5 boasts two distinct fuel-efficiency ratings. The standard 2.5-liter engine garners 24 miles per gallon in urban environments and 30 miles per gallon during highway cruising. Meanwhile, the higher-performing turbocharged engine clocks in at 22 miles per gallon in city driving and 27 miles per gallon on the open road.

Mazda CX-5 Interior

Upon entering the top-tier CX-5 models, you may feel as if you’ve been transported into a vehicle by abductors who typically opt for an Audi or a Mercedes. Exceptional materials and an exquisite layout combine to create a distinct sense of luxury. The floor-mounted accelerator pedal offers a superior feel compared to the more common suspended variant, the finely-crafted steering wheel is perfectly aligned with the driver, and all the front-seat armrests are thoughtfully set at the same height to maximize comfort.

However, certain compromises are packaged in a compact form: in this instance, our testing revealed that the CX-5 could accommodate just nine carry-on suitcases behind its rear seats. Nevertheless, the storage area benefits from a completely level loading floor. The cabin also features various compartments and pockets for stashing smartphones and other petite items. For example, the center console boasts a deep tray at the front and a convenient bin equipped with a removable shelf.

Infotainment System

Each variant features a 10.3-inch infotainment screen, predominantly controlled using a rotary controller and volume knob situated on the center console. The interface is additionally responsive to voice commands and steering wheel buttons. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated as standard features for all models. The CX-5 also comes equipped with Mazda Connected Services, which grants access to remote vehicle functions via a smartphone application and offers a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot.

Warranty

Kia and Hyundai outshine Mazda when it comes to warranty coverage, and some competitors in this category even provide complimentary maintenance. The limited warranty extends for three years or 36,000 miles. The powertrain warranty is effective for five years or 60,000 miles. Unfortunately, there is no provision for complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Pros and Cons of The Mazda CX-5

Pros

  • Compelling driving dynamics
  • An appealing and high-end interior
  • Quiet at high speeds

Cons

  • The ride quality, while decent, leans slightly towards the firmer side when compared to its class
  • Offers less rear legroom and cargo space

Wrap Up

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 emerges as a standout choice, combining the brand’s celebrated nimble handling with a touch of near-luxury comfort—all at a price accessible to a wide range of consumers. This unique fusion of responsive road performance and refined interior amenities makes the CX-5 a prime contender in its category, particularly when you opt for the upscale models featuring the optional 256-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

While the base engine may exhibit a slightly more restrained 187-horsepower output, it’s worth noting that every CX-5 comes equipped with all-wheel drive and inherits the brand’s signature agile handling, ensuring satisfaction regardless of your powertrain preference. Whether you’re seeking that extra punch on the open road or simply want a dependable and comfortable ride, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 has something to offer for a diverse array of SUV enthusiasts.
