Mercedes-Benz Unveils the Vision EQXX Concept with 1000km Range

According to the Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, Ola Källenius, Mercedes-Benz is on a mission to build the world’s most desirable electric cars, and that is already evident with their latest announcement, the Vision EQXX. Mercedes-Benz is among the automakers that plans to go full-electric by 2030, and just yesterday, the giant German auto brand unveiled the Vision EQXX concept car to demonstrate its leadership and capabilities in EV technology as the electric era continues to intensify.

The compact four-door vehicle which a nearsighted person could easily mistake for a McLaren Speedtail from a certain distance, was virtually unveiled yesterday as part of the CES technology show in Las Vegas, and a lot of important information was made known, such as claims that the Vision EQXX will have 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) real-world driving range on a single charge. If the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX ever comes to fruition, it has the potential to give some big-name competitors a serious run for their money, like the Lucid Air Dream Edition by over 100 miles as well as the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus by approximately 220 miles and Mercedes will achieve this with a smaller battery pack, under 100 kWh in capacity against the Lucid’s 118-kWh pack and the Tesla’s 100-kWh pack. In comparison to the EQS, the EQXX’s battery is also half the size and therefore, 30% lighter. The solar panels on the roof would give the EQXX additional 15.5 miles of range, which adds to the aerodynamic optimization of the car.

The Vision EQXX sedan weighs approximately 3,858 lbs, has a wheelbase of 110 inches, and is powered by a single 200-hp electric motor mounted at the rear of the car and driving the rear wheels. The motor is based on the eATS unit that currently powers the compact EQA hatchback and the newly launched EQB SUV, but it has been extensively reworked to reduce energy consumption and losses through system design, material selection, lubrication, and heat management, thanks to the engineers from the Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrain (HPP) facility in Brixworth, England.

The Vision EQXX which is considerably lightweight with its aforementioned weight, has a drag coefficient of Cd 0.17 which makes it very aerodynamic. The German automaker also claimed that 95% of the battery energy will be directed towards the wheels of the vehicle. The interior of the EQXX exudes elegance and it features a single 47.5-inch, mini-LED 8K screen. Similar to the Hyperscreen in the EQS, it spans across the entire width of the front dashboard as a one-piece display.

Mercedes-Benz AG, Chief Technology Officer responsible for Development and Procurement stated; “As a halo car, the Vision EQXX firmly establishes Mercedes-Benz as the brand that pairs luxury with technology in the automotive world and beyond. And the way we developed it is as revolutionary as the vehicle itself. VISION EQXX has seen the best minds from our R&D centers work together with engineers from our Formula 1 and Formula E programs. They are proving that innovations from motorsport – where powertrains are already highly electrified – have immediate relevance for road car development. We are challenging current development processes with innovative spirit and outside-the-box thinking. This truly is the way forward.”
